Resources for Individuals and Caregivers
The ALS Association, Minnesota Chapter offers a wide variety of resources for persons with ALS and their caregivers. Those resources include:
Employee/Individuals Resources
- Library includes books, videos, and tapes.
- The Hrbek-Sing Communication Assistance Device Program allows individuals who have lost their ability to communicate to borrow communication devices that are not covered by medical insurance. The program also provides environmental controls to these individuals so they can maintain their independence as their disease progresses.
- Support groups facilitated by a patient services coordinator (RN) and a medical social worker. Support groups can be a source of education about ALS including learning aspects of ALS such as nutrition, physical and occupational therapy, swallowing, medications, and much more.
- Assistance with advance directives (i.e. health care directives).
- An equipment loan pool that has used durable medical equipment available for loan.
- The ALS Informer- A free bi-monthly newsletter.
- Volunteer programs
Caregiver Resources
- The Jack Norton Family Respite Care Program provides brief periods of relief from the stressful responsibility of caring for a loved one on a round-the-clock basis.
- Patient/family consultation and support is offered by phone or meeting personally to discuss medical care issues, family concerns, and other related needs.
- Library includes books, videos, and tapes.
- Assistance with advance directives (i.e. health care directives).
- The ALS Informer- A free bi-monthly newsletter.
