Why I Give

At Community Health Charities Minnesota, we encourage you to give with purpose. Read the stories below to hear how other donors were inspired to make a contribution to CHCM.

I have long believed in sharing the resources I have with those who do not. About the time that my wife died at age 58 I became aware of this organization. Having just been exposed to the many expensive resources of our medical community, I knew the cost of using these and their potential. Thus, I chose to begin giving to Community Health Charities Minnesota and have continued to this date.

My dad was diagnosed ten years ago for ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease). He has no movement in his legs, cannot speak and has trouble eating. My mom is sole caretaker. Her vigilant care, we believe, has been the main reason we still have dad in our lives. Community Health Charities Minnesota helps support the ALS Association, Minnesota Chapter. With their help we have assistive devices that allow my dad to communicate and use the computer. My mom receives respite from her caregiving for a few hours weekly with the help of a nurse who visits and is paid for by a foundation through the ALS Association.

There is no known reason or cure for ALS. With the help of the ALS Association, Minnesota Chapter, dad is able to watch his grandchildren grow up and have a better quality of life.

When my six-year-old nephew was born, we knew that something wasn’t right. It took many months, but eventually doctors determined that he had myotonic dystrophy- a congenital disease that meant his muscles didn’t develop like that should, and makes everything we take for granted (such as eating, walking, speaking and writing) very difficult. I marvel at his sunny disposition and his willingness to keep trying when we adults would probably give up.

As I look on, frustrated that I can’t do more, I donate to Community Health Charities Minnesota because I hope that someday researchers will find a cure for this terrible disease.

"It is almost impossible to describe how it feels to know people are working everyday to raise money to find a cure for [childhood cancer]." -- Angie Laehn, mother of Emma (cancer survivor)
